Rafael Cantón is the Head of the Clinical Microbiology Department at the University Hospital Ramón y Cajal (Madrid, Spain) and is associated Professor of Clinical Microbiology at Complutense University of Madrid. His clinical and research work is focussed on antimicrobial resistance mechanisms, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, respiratory tract infections (mainly in cystic fibrosis patients), and interplay of clonal epidemiology and resistance. He has published more than 300 articles in medical journals, 45 chapters in teaching books and had several communications on international meeting and congresses. He is also an active member of the European Society for Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Disease (ESCMID), Spanish Society of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology (SEIMC) and is currently the President of the European Committee for Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (EUCAST). He is an Associated Editor of Clinical Microbiology and Infection journal and member of the editorial board of Microbial Drug Resistant, Drug Resistance Updates and Enfermedades Infecciosas y Microbiología Clinica journals. He is editor of the Clinical Microbiology Procedures of the Spanish Society of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology (SEIMC)
