Dr. L.Clifford McDonald is an internationally recognized expert on the epidemiology and prevention of healthcare-associated infections and antibiotic resistance, with particular expertise in the epidemiology, diagnosis, and prevention of Clostridium difficile infections. He is the author or co-author of over 150 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters on these subjects. Dr. McDonald is currently the Associate Director for Science in the Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.
Dr. McDonald graduated from Northwestern University Medical School, completed his Internal Medicine Residency at Michigan State University, and an Infectious Diseases Fellowship at the University of South Alabama, following which he completed a fellowship in Medical Microbiology at Duke University. Past positions have included Associate Investigator at the National Health Research Institutes in Taiwan, where he assisted in the development of an island-wide antibiotic resistance monitoring program, and Assistant Professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of Louisville, where he served as healthcare epidemiologist. Dr. McDonald is a former officer in CDCs Epidemic Intelligence Service and former Chief of the Prevention and Response Branch as well as former Senior Advisor for Science and Integrity in the Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion at the CDC.
